Karen Kijewski

Bio

Karen Kijewski

Karen Kijewski (pronounced kee-eff-ski) was born in Berkeley, California. Her father taught at the University of California, and she later attended the school, earning a BA and a Masters degree.

She worked as an high school English teacher (Brookline High School in Massachusetts) for almost ten years. She quit that job and went on to write during the day and tend bar at night. She wrote articles for local periodicals but did not enjoy the research, note-taking and the money. She switched to fiction and was hooked right away.

She heard about the Best First Private Eye Novel of the Year contest sponsored by St. Martin's Press and decided to enter. She submitted a piece of work that would eventually become Katwalk, the first book in the Kat Colorado series. She won the prize. The book was later awarded a Private Eye Writers of America Shamus Award and an Anthony Award. Since that time she has written eight more novels in the series and several short stories appearing in various anthologies.

Karen is a past president of the northern California chapter of the Mystery Writers of America. She has two daughters, and is currently living in Sacramento, California with her husband.
