Bio

J.A. Jance

J.A. Jance (Judith Ann Jance) knew in childhood that she wanted to be a writer. She graduated from Brisbee High School in 1962, and went on to earn a degree in English and Secondary Education. In 1970, she received a M. Ed. in Library Science. She taught high school English, worked as a librarian, and sold life insurance, until she finally started writing in 1982.

Jance used her initials because her publisher believed making her gender known would be a liability for a book about a male detective. To maintain the ambiguity, the first 6 Beaumont books had no author photo and no biographical information of any kind.

She has two grown children and currently lives with her second husband. She's active in fundraising for various charities.
