P.D. James

P.D. James (Phyllis Dorothy James White) was born in Oxford on August 3, 1920 and educated at Cambridge High School. She worked for thirty years in various departments of the British Civil Service, and served as a magistrate and as a governor of the BBC. Ever since she was a child, she wanted to be a novelist but only pursued this insterest when she was in her late 30s.

Her writing has earned her many prizes and awards, including the Grand Master Award from Mystery Writers of America in 1999, and the Diamond Dagger from British Crime Writers' Association in 1987. In 1991, she was created Baroness James of Holland Park. She celebrated her 80th birthday in 2000 and published her autobiography (Time to Be in Earnest).

She lives in London and Oxford.
