Bio

Sparkle Hayter

Sparkle Vera Lynnette Hayter was born in 1958, in Pouce Coupe, British Columbia. She grew up in Edmonton, but moved to New York City in 1980 to finish a degree in film at New York University.

She has worked as an TV assignment editor, news writer, news producer, field producer, stand up comic, freelance reporter (in Washington DC) and, of course, a fiction writer. She has travelled extensively, spending time in Atlanta, Washington, Toronto, Pakistan, India, Europe and Tokyo.

Her first novel, What's a Girl Gotta Do? won the 1995 Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel. Sparkle wrote the first draft of this novel while traveling around India on trains. Some of her (shorter) work has been included in The Nation, New Woman, the New York Times, and The Toronto Globe & Mail. She was a regular panelist on CNN's issue-oriented talk show CNN & Company, and has also appeared on Diplomatic License (CNN), Good Day New York, NPR, CBC, BBC and Paris Premiere.

Sparkle still performs stand-up comedy occasionally, and last appeared at Stand-up New York and Don't Tell Mama in Manhattan in 2001. She's currently living in Paris.
