Bio

Leona Gom

Leona Gom was born in 1946 in the north Peace River district of Alberta. She lived on an isolated farm for twenty years. She received her B.Ed. and M.A. from the University of Alberta. Leona now lives in White Rock, British Columbia.

She worked as a professor at various colleges and universities. She taught English at the University of Alberta, University of British Columbia and at Douglas/Kwantlen College (Surrey, B.C.). While at Douglas/Kwantlen College, she was editor and poetry editor of Event, a literary magazine. She has also worked as a writer-in-residence at the University of Alberta, University of Lethbridge, and the University of Winnipeg.

She has published six books of poetry and several novels. Leona has been published in journals and anthologies around the world.

In 1981, she co-founded the Feminist Caucus of the League of Canadian Poets. Land of the Peace won the CAA Award for Best Book of Poetry in 1981. Five years later, Housebroken won the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize.
